Summer Goals

Last year at this time I had just completed my 16th marathon and was in the middle of training to accomplish some big running goals. You can go back a few blog posts and read about two big runs I did last summer - pacing a friend for the last 20 miles of Western States last June (it was so fun, I would love to do it again), and that went right into my own goal of running my first (and only) ultra race - The Santa Barbara 100K last July. Since then I've run four more full marathons, including Boston and Big Sur, qualified for Boston 2018 at my 18th marathon, set a new half marathon PR (1:35:17), and a new 10K PR (42:39), but one goal that still eludes me is setting a new marathon PR. My current PR of 3:28:08 is from Arizona Rock 'n' Roll marathon 2016. It just hasn't come together for me on race day despite my nearly perfect training for California International Marathon 2016 and Boston 2017.

After Big Sur International Marathon I did have a few days where I considered trying to run a PR course and just hope for the best coming off of my training, but decided a little break from the 26.2 distance was good for me and I'll wait until the end of the year to try again. For now, I don't really have any big goals until California International Marathon in December where I'll once again try for a marathon PR. If I can achieve that goal, I will have accomplished all I set out to do for the year I turned 40! I'm working towards improving my 5K times this summer, but I'm not sure I'll ever set a new PR in that one, and that's okay (my PR is from three years ago and I still can't believe I was able to run a 20:11 5K)! It's important to get some breaks from the intense training that comes with marathons, so for now I want to just enjoy running. Summertime running isn't really my favorite, but I sure do enjoy getting to run with my kids more! I'm also taking this summer to focus more on yoga and get more training and will be a certified "Yoga for Athletes" teacher this June as well as some more Piyo instructor training in July. So, make some goals, but then take some time to enjoy those summer sunrises and sunsets. Go a little slower some days and look around, listen to the wind in the trees, and the birds chirping. Try a new race distance that scares you a little, meet that friend that you've been meaning to run with, or hit the trails for a real change! Some people aren't able to run, so get out there and enjoy it!
